Kilkenny Macra Blood Donation Drive
Macra members are invited to the Kilkenny Macra na Feirme’s Blood Donation Drive in association with the Irish Blood Transfusion Service. Members of Kilkenny Macra na Feirme will visit the clinic in the Newpark Hotel Kilkenny on Tuesday 16th April at 7pm and we look forward to welcoming you.
Every year, thousands of people require blood transfusions because they are undergoing surgery, recovering from cancer or have been in a serious accident. While over 3,000 blood donations are needed each week in Ireland, only 3% of the eligible population give blood. One in four of us will require a blood donation at some point in our lives. Why not spare one of your 10-12 pints of blood?
In preparation for donating blood:
- Please visit www.giveblood.ie to learn more about blood donation and complete an eligibility quiz prior to visiting the clinic.
- Please bring photo ID with you when you visit the clinic.
- While there is a small risk of fainting while donating blood, to reduce this risk:
- Drink plenty of cold, non-alcoholic fluids in the 24 hours prior to donating
- Eat savoury and salty snacks in the 24 hours prior to donating.
- Eat something substantial in the 3 hours prior to donating.
Ensure you allow enough time to donate – the donation itself should only take around 8 minutes, however you will need to allow 60-90 minutes from registration to resting afterwards while enjoying refreshments.
Wear your Macra half-zips or jerseys and spread the word about Macra na Feirme while donating!

Athboy Macra "A" Team get through to Macra na Feirme Amateur Drama National Final
Athboy Macra na Feirme were in a unique position in the Macra na Feirme All Ireland Drama Semi-Final on the 5th and 6th April. They were not just competing with clubs from Cork and Cavan - but they were also competing against themselves. Not only that, but both teams were on home ground in St James Hall, Athboy.
On Saturday 5th April, Athboy Macra's "A" Team performed James McClure's "Laundry and Bourbon" featuring a cast of Siobhán Kearney, Orla Kearney and Aisling Daly. Athboy "A" dominated proceedings, not only advancing to the National Final in Cork on the weekend of the 26-27th April - but also raking in the judges awards, including: Athboy A e Best Actress (Orla Kearney), Adjucators Award (for set design by John Daly) and Best Producer (Paddy Cosgrave). The play, produced by Paddy Cosgrave who also produced Enfield Macra's 2019 All Ireland Drama winning play "The Last of the Last of The Mohicans", tells the story of three Texan housewives sitting on a front porch gossiping about life in a rural town.
Athboy's "B" Team performed on the evening of Sunday 6th April in Floyd Dell's "Engima". The play featured Patrick Brogan and Sandy Gallagher in a short, tense, dialogue between a couple on the cusp of separation. Athboy "B"'s play was produced by David Daly with set design by Mary Daly.
Macra na Feirme's Amateur Drama competition seeks to develop dramatic skills, set production, stage management and serve as an introduction to the world of theatre. Each team has a maximum of 55 mins to perform their play.
The All Ireland Final of Macra na Feirme's Amateur Drama Competition takes place in Rossmore Theatre, Clonakilty, Co. Cork on the 26/27th April.
