Nitrates Extension Welcomed

Macra na Feirme National President James Healy welcomed the announcement of a four year extension to the Nitrates derogation under the Nitrates Action Plan by Ministers Creed and Murphy and their respective department officials.

The Nitrates derogation is of critical importance to farmers who are perusing sustainable intensification to allow them to farm within the confines of the Nitrates Action Program and overall Water Framework Directive.

One of the new stipulations of the nitrates derogation is that farmers must have sufficient storage for manure and soiled water.  Mr Healy said ‘the step up in enforcement to have adequate storage on derogation farms requires a common sense and pragmatic approach by authorities to give farmers the necessary breathing space and support to comply with the requirements’.
